What size or length or width or weight? (Biothane)

Guess what?? It's really up to what you and your pup prefer. But here are a few info points!

Size: (collar) Just measure. Saves you lots of strain. I don't charge for larger collar sizes so no need to skimp or guess. Simply take a soft measure tape and wrap around neck, this gives you the neck size. Or measure the old collar to the hole most used.

Length: (leash) It will depend on how you walk. Want close to you with large dog- 1ft-3ft (30cm to 1m) probably will do. Close with a small pup, maybe, 3ft to 4ft (1m to 1.2m). Very subjective! You might hold your leash across the body or are really short/tall. Best to measure a comfortable length for you.

Choices:

Long leash length examples:

  • 10ft (3m) - kayak, basketball net, step ladder, alligator
  • 12ft (3.6m) - pool table, conference table, compact camper van
  • 15ft (4.5m) - mini bus, average parking stall, great white shark
  • 20ft (6m) - half shipping container, giraffe ht, 4x park benches
  • 25ft (2.6m) - Orca, singles tennis court, RV length
  • 30ft (9m) - 3 story building, 2x sedan car, half bowling lane
  • 33ft (10m) - 5x queen sized beds, yellow school bus
  • 40ft (12m) - light pole, full shipping container, 1/2 IMax screen
  • 50ft (15m) - basketball court width, 5 stories, semi trailer
  • 100ft (30m) - Boeing 747(about), 10 stories, 3 school busses

Widths: We have Biothane in 6 widths with two coatings (see weight).

Leashes:

Collars types:

Weight: The strength is the core webbing, not the coating, at 1000lbs per inch of width or 450kg per 24mm width.  Coatings are called: Standard or ST (2.5mm thick) and Super Heavy or SH (3.8mm thick).

By length (by example) of 10ft (3m) leash:

  • 9mm (3/8") 180gms
  • 12mm (1/2") 200gms
  • 16mm (5/8) 310gms
  • 20mm (3/4") 480gms

By collar (example) size 14" centre hole

  • 12mm (1/2") 30gms
  • 16mm (5/8) 55gms
  • 20mm (3/4") 75gms
  • 25mm (1") 110gms
  • 38mm (1.5") 210gms

Last Little bit:

"My dog is strong and pulls, what strength of leash do I need?"

  1. Fail point one is you. (handle in hand) How much can you hold?
  2. Fail two is usually the collar or harness
  3. Fail three is either the snap, rivet, or Biothane
    • Regular snaps max strength: 9mm-20kgs, 12mm- 230kgs, 16mm- 450kgs, 20mm- 500kgs
    • Scissor snaps max strength: 12mm- 120kgs, 16mm- 250kgs, 20mm- 250kgs
    • Rivets: shear strength (each set) is 80kg (180lbs), but this doubles when adding each one (IE: the 9mm leash has 2 rivet sets so 160kg, the 12mm has 3 rivet sets so 240kgs).
    • Biothane has a breaking strength of- 1000lbs per inch of width or 450kg per 24mm width

Easy Answer; large dogs = large widths, small dogs = small widths. Adjust to fit your pooch and application. (Med dog, pulls like a sled dog and strong= maybe 20mm or 16mm leash is better // Med dog, doesn't pull= 12mm leash should be fine)

Disclaimer note: These numbers and weights are not always correct. Defects (visible and not) can change the weights/strengths. Use your judgment. I pulled most of these from the websites I get the material and supplies from, so there are variations with manufacturing. None are from personal experience or testing. Use at own risk, for intended purposes only, and keep your dog's (and your) safety in mind.
